Weight limit restrictions are used to limit the impact of heavy goods vehicles on the road network. There are clearly laid out limitations placed on varying design types of LGV’s, their axles and their trailers.
Vehicles that operate above their Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM), Axle or Train weight limits are a potential safety hazard because the frame, suspension, brakes and tyres are not designed for weights above the rating the manufacturer has set. Heavy penalties apply to drivers who infringe weight limitations.
It is also the Drivers responsibility to ensure, that every load carried on a motor vehicle or trailer is secured i.e. loose loads sheeted and all loads physically restrained.
